Your Bucket List Holiday Is Booked. Are Your Dentures Ready?
You’ve finally booked it.
The trip you’ve talked about for years. The cruise you’ve always wanted to take. The destination that’s been sitting on your bucket list.
The flights are booked, the hotel is sorted, the excursions are planned and you’re already counting down the days.
Then you look at your dentures and think:
“Are these really going to get me through the holiday?”
It’s not something you necessarily think about every day. But when you’re about to embark on a once-in-a-lifetime trip, suddenly those little niggles can seem much more important.
Perhaps your dentures have become loose. Maybe they’re worn, uncomfortable or don’t feel as secure as they used to. Or perhaps you’ve had problems with them before and the thought of being away from home when something goes wrong is making you nervous.
If you’ve spent years looking forward to your bucket-list trip, your dentures shouldn’t be something you have to worry about while you’re there.
You’ve waited long enough for this trip
For many people, a bucket-list holiday isn’t just another holiday.
It might be:
- A cruise you’ve always dreamed of taking
- Seeing the Northern Lights
- A safari in Africa
- A road trip through America
- Finally visiting Australia or New Zealand
- Exploring somewhere you’ve always wanted to see
- A special holiday with your partner
- Taking the whole family away while everyone is still able to travel together
Whatever it is, these are the experiences you’ll remember for years.
You’ll be eating out, meeting people, taking photographs, laughing, talking and trying things you’ve never done before.
The last thing you want is to spend part of the trip wondering whether your denture is going to move when you eat or speak.
“What if something happens to my denture while I’m away?”
This is one of the biggest concerns people have before travelling.
At home, a loose or broken denture is inconvenient. You know where to go for help and you’re familiar with your local denture clinic.
When you’re travelling, things can be very different.
You might be in another country. You could be several days into a cruise. You may be travelling between different destinations or spending long periods away from any familiar dental or denture service.
A small denture problem can suddenly become a much bigger worry.
That’s why, if you’re planning a major trip, it’s worth thinking about your dentures before you travel rather than after something goes wrong.
Are your dentures still doing everything you need them to?
Sometimes the warning signs are obvious.
Your denture may be:
- Moving when you eat or speak
- Causing sore areas
- Cracked or damaged
- Looking worn
- Becoming increasingly difficult to eat with
- Requiring more adhesive than it used to
- Feeling loose towards the end of the day
But sometimes it’s much more subtle.
You may simply have stopped enjoying wearing your dentures.
You’ve adapted. You’ve learned which foods to avoid. You know how to position your tongue when you speak. You might automatically check your denture with your tongue after laughing.
Because the changes happen gradually, you may not even realise how much you’ve adjusted your life around your dentures.
A big holiday can be the moment when you suddenly notice.
Your dentures should let you enjoy the experience
Imagine sitting down to dinner on your cruise.
There’s food you’ve never tried before. You’re sitting with new friends or family. Someone tells a joke and everyone starts laughing.
You shouldn’t be thinking:
“Is my denture moving?”
You should be enjoying the evening.
The same applies whether you’re having dinner overlooking the sea, taking photographs under the Northern Lights, enjoying a meal after a safari or sitting in a restaurant somewhere you’ve dreamed of visiting for years.
Your dentures should be part of your smile — not the focus of your attention.
What if your dentures are several years old?
Dentures can last for many years, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they will continue to fit and function in exactly the same way.
Your mouth and supporting tissues naturally change over time. Dentures can also become worn, and the teeth may gradually lose their original shape and definition.
If you’ve noticed a change in the fit, comfort or appearance of your dentures, it may be worth having them assessed.
Depending on their condition, options might include an adjustment, repair or denture reline.
Sometimes, however, a new denture may be the more appropriate solution.
It’s always helpful, where possible to keep your existing denture as a spare set, especially if you’re having a new one made. This gives you added peace of mind while travelling, knowing you have a backup if anything unexpected happens.
The important thing is understanding what is causing the problem and finding the right solution for you.
Don’t wait until the week before you leave
If you’re considering new dentures before a major holiday, give yourself plenty of time.
New dentures can take some getting used to. Your mouth, tongue and muscles need time to adapt, and you may need a follow-up adjustment once you’ve started wearing them.
The last thing you want is to collect a new denture a few days before your flight and discover that you’re still getting used to it when you board the plane.
If your trip is particularly important to you, plan ahead.
That way, you have time to become comfortable with your new dentures before you travel.
What should you take with you?
If you’re travelling with dentures, it’s sensible to take the things you normally use to look after them.
Your travel kit might include:
- Your usual denture cleaning products
- A spare denture
- A suitable denture brush
- A secure denture case
- Any denture adhesive you normally use
- Spare cleaning supplies
- Any other products you regularly rely on for your denture care
And if you’re flying to join your cruise or start your holiday, keep your dentures and essential denture-care items in your hand luggage, rather than putting them in your checked suitcase.
It can also be reassuring to take a spare set of dentures with you if you have them, or ensure your existing dentures are suitable to act as a backup. If you’re having new dentures made, ask about keeping your current set as a travel spare, so you’re never without a solution if something unexpected happens.
Your bucket list shouldn’t come with a denture worry
Perhaps you’ve been putting off doing something about your dentures for years.
Maybe you’ve always told yourself:
“I’ll sort them out eventually.”
A bucket-list holiday might be the perfect reason to stop putting it off.
Not because you need a “perfect” smile.
Not because you should feel embarrassed about wearing dentures.
But because you’ve spent your time, money and energy making this experience happen — and you deserve to enjoy it.
You deserve to sit down for dinner without worrying about your dentures.
You deserve to smile in the photographs.
You deserve to laugh without thinking about your teeth.
And you deserve to concentrate on where you are, who you’re with and what you’re experiencing.
